Oporto (Porto in Portuguese, IPA: / 'poɾtu /), is the second Portuguese city, seat of the district in the north of the country. It has a population of 240,000 inhabitants, 2,000,000 if you consider the metropolitan area. The city is located on the north bank of the Douro River, not far from the Atlantic Ocean.
The town festival is June 24, the day of St. John the Baptist. The same
Portugal and the famous Port wine (in Portuguese Vinho do Porto) owe their name to the city of Oporto. One of the most popular Portuguese products at international level is precisely the Port wine. Its name derives from the fact that aging in the cellars of the twin city of Oporto, Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river Douro.
Porto is one of the most industrialized districts of Portugal and the city in particular is sometimes called "A capital do norte" ("The capital of the north") as it serves as the center of the most industrialized region of northern Portugal, and is well known for its entrepreneurial spirit, characteristic culture, people and local cuisine. Occasionally
Porto is also called "Cidade Invicta" ("unconquerable City"), as it gave no attack of the Moors or the army of Napoleon, and has never been defeated militarily since its creation during the Empire Romano.
