Beautiful Agony Brazil

Personals, Pierre Marie Goulet

will appear on Sunday, February 27 at 19.15
in the small auditorium of the Rivoli Theater in
part of the tribute to Paul Trancoso
International Film Festival at the Port.

A movie that already walked a little everywhere, but in Oporto, one of its key positions, will be presented for the first time.
Since its world premiere at the 17th FIDMarseille - Festival International du Documentaire Marseille in 2006 where he was awarded the prize for best soundtrack, this film was introduced in Japan (Festival of Yamagata where he received the Mayor's Prize), Spain ( Documenta Madrid, where he received the honor award of the jury), Canada (9th Rencontres du Cinéma Documentaire de Montréal) in Belgium (12th Festival Filmer à tout prix in Brussels), Brazil (Forum doc in Belo Horizonte), France ( Traces de Vie Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, Etats généraux du Documentaire of Lussas), Italy (XI th Rome Film Festival and the 6th Festival I Mille Occhi Trieste), Argentina (9e BAFICI Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Buenos Aires), Chile (14 º Festival de Cine Valdivia), Portugal (DocLisboa, Cinematheque, Doc'sKingdom,) etc..

1957. A group of peasant farmers from the village of Peroguarda in Alentejo, will sing the Port. The poet Antonio Reis, future director of Tras-os-Montes, Ana, hear these songs in the company of young friends. Conquered, Antonio Reis, takes the path of Peroguarda, 700 km to the south, riding on his scooter with a tape recorder under his arm. In its wake, other young people will go to the Port Alentejo over the years. (...) Among them, Luís Ferreira Alves, Alexandre Alves Costa, José Mário Branco.
1959. Michel Giacometti, the Corsican who saved the traditional Portuguese music, begins a search of 30 years during which he will collect the memory of popular culture. Not slow to discover the village where Peroguarda return periodically. It is there that, in accordance with his wishes, will be buried in 1990.
1965. In Porto, the young poet Manuel António Pina, and other young aspiring poets choose António Reis reference.
1966. Filmmaker Paul Richards, one of the filmmakers who started the New Portuguese Cinema with his first film Green Years, decides to shoot a second feature in Furadouro, placing the story in the midst of the fishermen who had a childhood fascination.
These and others are part of an informal tribe whose members recognize themselves when they meet.

It is said that in death, it is always far
to find something.
reincarnated in the recognition of a voice, and any
distant voice brings the certainty of not having family
never been alone. Because we recognize
on park benches
've never been seated.
Because the memory that is extinguished,
is memory that lasts. What mystery
memory that is, the life that
, erasures,
write again what does not cease to feel?

Sérgio Godinho
original poem for "Meetings"

After finishing Polyphony, film dedicated to Michel Giacometti was born of a desire not to lose everything I had been offered over the shooting and had not used in the assembly end, songs, narratives, poems that were written and who risked losing their memory if they were not integrated into a new project. Knowing them forgotten in a box, I did not like anything.

There was also a desire to go through some of the ways that I had been given during that time: the coming of Antonio Kings (then not yet a poet and filmmaker) to the Alentejo, the village of Peroguarda where Michel Giacometti, in accordance with his wishes, will be buried, and others who wanted to go, I approached the film for example by Paulo Rocha, Change Life, which fascinated me in particular by the application and interaction between the story that is told and the end of campaigns Furadouro. Thus was born the beginning of the project "Encounters" that sought under the original text "limit the presence of a tribal sound, musical, poetic, human, a tribe whose territory amazing analog and does not correspond to any known geographical area"

Preparation and after the shooting meant that what should be a joint has become autonomous. The "continuation" of "Polyphony," "Encounters" has become a completely independent film, even if they are different characters and places in the previous movie, so much so that the material collected at the time of "Polyphony" (perhaps even too " cool ") has found its place in the final assembly.

Of Shooting of "Polyphony" there remain only in "Encounters" two or three minutes two landscape plans and a fragment of a Corsican song. (Find a way not to lose what was collected during the filming of "Polyphony" is therefore a work yet to do!)

Little by little she is defining what constituted an undercurrent of the facets of Meetings: the echo of a past, a time which came to an end, a culture that goes out, but an echo where echo invocations. It was not an unfortunate demise, nor a nostalgic return to the past, not even to bring the fragments of the past but this, from memory, giving rise to what is alive. This is where the film got to me a strange relationship with time. Blend or faced different times "historic", the chronology loses its meaning, the dates do not really have any importance. The past no longer occupies the place it is normally assigned.

This strange territory and this time leave all the space, I hope, to those who inhabit it: Virginia Dias, Mighela Cesari and Mighele Rafaelli, Paulo Rocha, Manuel António Pina, Nicole Casalonga Jose Mario Branco ... still space for those who live with their voices: António Joaquim Spear, Sérgio Godinho, and although not not see ever, perhaps even more so now, the poet Antonio Reis.

This film is dedicated to Antoine Bonfanti that accompanied all of my movies for many years. His passing made me fear the work on the sound and particularly mixtures. However the work of blends with Joaquim Pinto, with James Silva, about the sounds recorded by Francis Bonfanti dispelled all my fears (and the film won the prize for the best sound at the Festival de Marseille).
